Jargon Buster (Glossary)

While I try to keep my writing simple and easy to understand, you might come across some jargon you need a little more clarification on. So each time I blog, if I feel further explanation is needed, I’ll add a new entry here. While this list of jargon terms is short at the moment, it is envisaged that it will increase over time.

Raw Foodist

People who believe that raw food is better for us because the nutrients have not been destroyed by cooking, and that the enzymes still alive within the plants help us more easily digest them. Essentially, they eat raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains and legumes. Followers of this diet interpret the meaning of ‘raw food’ in various ways. So, some may leave out food groups such grains or legumes, or they may include other groups like raw milk or in more extreme cases raw meat. Additionally, because this is a difficult diet to follow all of the time, people often express their adherence as a percentage e.g. “I’m 70% raw”. Meaning the other 30% of the time they eat cooked food. In it’s strictest sense a ‘Raw Foodist’ is a ‘Raw Vegan’ and does not eat any animal products. However, there are many in the raw food community who believe that animal products are an important part of the human diet, and so may eat eggs, dairy, honey and meat. Again, this is another example of where someone may class themselves as say 80% raw, because the remaining 20% of the time they eat animal products.

If a term is not included above or the explanation is not clear, leave a comment and I’ll do my best to explain.
